smartchair.jpgSmart is another word for intelligent or clever; and design company Michael Graves & Associates wasn’t out of line in calling one of its newest creations the Smart Chair. It is an innovative addition to the wide range of seating for hotels available today, another example of so-called “technologically interactive” furniture that consumers are seeing more and more.

The Smart Chair is part of the Wyndham Hotels’ latest upgrade. At present it can be found in several of the chain’s locations in the United States but is slated to be installed in all Wyndham hotels by the end of 2008.

Just what is it about the Smart Chair that makes it so smart? Consider the following features:

  • It has surfaces for dining, wining, and computing
  • It is fully wired for Internet access and power
  • It has pockets in which magazines and newspapers can be stored
  • Upholstery is available in fabric, vinyl and leather
  • It is built for the comfort of both right- and left-handed people

A great number of travelers nowadays carry some sort of electronic gadget with them, something they find indispensable even when traveling, whether it’s for business or pleasure. The Smart Chair is targeted not only at Generation X-ers, but for members of the Y Generation and baby boomers too. It’s a functional piece of furniture that travelers with laptops will find useful. Don’t have a laptop? It still comes in handy for charging a cellular phone or a personal digital assistant.

It is already a given that hotel furniture needs to be attractive as well as comfortable. With interactive furniture like the Smart Chair, functionality is brought into the equation, making furniture not just things that just sit there doing nothing except provide the basic functions. It’s more than just high-tech, it’s practical for a traveler too. It’s something that will probably be appreciated by Wyndham’s guests, geek and non-geek alike.
